Fellowship
Koinonia – fellowship - is key to Christian life. We share in friendship with God. We share in friendship with neighbors. We do
not live unto ourselves alone. We live with others and God. The church brings us together to share in holy friendship with God,
others and ourselves.
One of the highlights of Sunday worship for many people is the
opportunity to connect with friends. After worship, we gather
for chat n coffee to catch up with each other’s stories, to meet
new friends, and to enjoy tasty goodies. Goodies always taste
better when with friends.
In the early church, the congregation gathered for an agape
meal. The idea was to celebrate the reality that God is
revealed in the death and resurrection of Jesus; thus, in the
midst of this sacred meal, the congregation would stop and
offer gratitude to God for the gift of Jesus who now lives
amongst the people of the church as the risen Lord. In time,
this longer service and bigger meal was shortened to a smaller
communion meal during Sunday worship.
Today, we at First Christian enjoy getting together for a monthly fellowship dinner. Usually, dinner is potluck style. Bring your
favorite food, and enjoy the company of good friends. While different from the early church agape meal, our fellowship
dinners fit with the tradition of the early church as we enjoy meaningful friendship around good food and fellowship.
